DLL File Basics Two
What did the letters DLL mean when referring to your PC?

DLL is an abbreviation for "Dynamic Link Library."

What Do DLL Files Do?

DLL files are engineered to support the functioning of other of your PC's files so that your PC operates properly.

How do DLL files get created?

The same people who write PC applications, whether they are games, graphics, audio files, or Microsoft software applications, write the DLL files needed for those applications to operate.

How do DLL files get onto your PC?

Whenever there is an application installed on your PC, whether it's installed at the factory, or you add it later on, that application may need Dll files if it is going to work correctly. Each time a new DLL file is installed on your PC, it's automatically assigned to a designated folder.

How big are DLL files?

The size of a given DLL file will depend on the number of luncheons it has to perform. The more work it does, the larger it will be.

Is it safe to delete DLL files?

Even if you start receiving frequent the DLL error messages, never, never, never delete a DLL file. You can remove them from your PC, but you should always use your uninstall program to do it. Even an uninstall through Graham, however, might not remove a DLL file if that DLL file is necessary for the use of more than one program.

If performing it on install does not get rid of the corrupt the DLL file, you could always get software designed specifically for DLL repair. Trying to delete a DLL file on your own could damage your PC enough that you won't be able to operate it even in safe mode.

What DLL errors occur the most often?

The most frequent DLL errors are the ones caused when a DLL file has been corrupted or is missing. These are the messages you’ll get when you have one of those problems:

\DLLFOLDERNAME\dllfilename.dll missing or corrupt: Please re-install a copy of the above file.

Cannot find \DLLFOLDERNAME\dllfilename.dll

Cannot find dllfilename.dll

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: /DLLFOLDERNAME/dllfilename.dll. Please re-install a copy of the above file
